Try to Start It, Carlos!

Who succeeds in this life? Those who keep pulling the cart despite their fear. What is the ultimate purpose of spirituality? It is not Love, because Love already is and always has been. The ultimate purpose is to eradicate fear from the mind completely. Fear is the deepest layer, the one that precedes any specific form or its manifestation.

True spirituality has only one question to answer, and it cannot answer it while fear remains. Therefore, anyone wishing to move forward will have to transcend all their insecurities, along with their diminished, powerless self-image. Let’s get started—later is already too late! The first thing to do is get out of the passenger seat and take over from the shadow driving the vehicle.

You have probably glanced sideways at it more than once and noticed that the roads it takes you down never make you happy. You need to make it stop the vehicle, telling it clearly and firmly that, from now on, you are driving. You will sit in the driver’s seat and put your hands on the wheel. The shadow will not get out; it will simply move into the passenger seat and accompany you for as long as there is a road ahead, pointing out your mistakes in an attempt to reclaim its old place.

Now, with your hands on the wheel, you will feel its rough texture and begin to realise that, from this moment on, it is up to you. You will look up and see a thick fog that prevents you from seeing more than two hundred metres ahead. It is made of pure fear, of every unimaginable fear that might arise in your mind.

You will see only a stretch of the road, so you will need to pay close attention to the here and now. The road you leave behind will disappear into the thick fog of oblivion and cease to matter, because there will be no going back. There will only be a way forward.

Now that you understand you alone will be responsible for driving, you will start the engine. “Try to start it, for God’s sake!” someone once said near the finish line. When you do, a spark will shoot through the back of your neck, the whole thing will begin to shudder, and your fears will soar. Perhaps you will break into a cold sweat at taking on such responsibility. Perhaps you will think, “What am I doing? I’m nobody!” But you will be somebody: you will be the driver, and that will be more than enough. Don’t worry—the shadow will make sure to repeat the same thing throughout the journey: “You’re nobody. You’re nothing.” Pay no attention. It is only a broken record playing an old song whose words you can barely make out.

With the car’s trembling reaching your hands and reverberating through your whole body, you will begin to trust and take one hand off the wheel. Then you will shift into first gear and, finally, press the accelerator slowly and gently. “What a rush—this thing is moving!” you will think.

At first, you will think you are driving a heavy tank, but as the journey calls on you to shift up through the gears, it will transform into a powerful sports car. When there are no gears left to shift into, you will press the accelerator to the floor, and shades of orange will begin to appear in the fog. Finally, it will vanish, and for an instant you will find yourself soaring over an abyss, thinking, “Wow! So the world was flat after all?” That will be your last amusing question before you fall and melt into the Sun that was just below you—the one you had been waiting for all this time.

A great scene for a grand finale. Lights, camera, action!
