Can We Build a Map to Understand How We Become Who We Are?
Project Atlas began with an apparently simple question:
Why do we do what we do?
Trying to answer it has led us to discover that many other questions lie behind it.
Questions about who we are, how we interpret what happens to us, why we feel what we feel, what leads us to act in a particular way, and how each experience ultimately transforms us.
Atlas is an attempt to explore these questions together.
Not to reduce human beings to a formula, but to investigate to what extent it is possible to build a map that allows us to better understand the vast network of relationships underlying our experience.
The Questions of Atlas
What Determines Who We Believe We Are?
Where does our identity come from?
What part of it comes from our history, what part do we learn from our environment, and what remains relatively stable despite our experiences?
To what extent does what we believe ourselves to be shape what we may eventually become?
Do We See the World as It Is?
Two people can face the same situation and experience completely different realities.
Why?
What happens between what occurs and what we ultimately experience?
What role do our previous experiences, beliefs, expectations, and preferences play in constructing what we perceive?
Where does perception end and interpretation begin?
Why Do Some Things Capture Our Attention While Others Disappear?
At any given moment, there is far more information than we can consciously process.
And yet, something seems to determine what matters.
Why do we notice certain signals and disregard others?
What makes something relevant to us?
And to what extent does what we pay attention to ultimately shape the reality we experience?
Where Do Our Emotions Come From?
What relationship exists between what we interpret, what happens in our body, and what we ultimately feel?
Can an emotion be understood independently of the interpretation that precedes it?
To what extent does our physiology alter the way we interpret a situation?
And to what extent can an interpretation alter our physiology?
Why Do We Do What We Do?
Between what we experience and what we do, there seems to be a complex process of selection.
Why, when faced with the same situation, does one person flee, another confront it, another remain still, and another try to understand?
What determines which possibilities we are capable of considering?
Why do some responses occur automatically while others require reflection?
Are we capable of choosing differently when we gain a better understanding of what is happening?
What Do We Learn From Our Experiences?
We act, and the world responds.
But what do we actually learn from that response?
A consequence may reinforce what we already believed, contradict it, or teach us something we had never considered.
Why do some experiences profoundly transform the way we understand the world while others pass almost unnoticed?
And what determines whether we are capable of revising a belief rather than protecting it?
How Does a Person Change?
If every experience has the potential to modify our understanding, then a person is never exactly the same after living through their own life.
What remains?
What changes?
How does learning accumulate?
Can a small change progressively alter the course of an entire life?
Can we understand a life as a continuous process of interaction between what a person already is and what they are still learning?
From the Individual to the World
And then an even larger question emerges.
Are these processes exclusively individual?
Societies also construct identities.
Groups share beliefs.
Institutions interpret threats.
Countries remember previous experiences.
Communities develop expectations about the future.
And all of them act upon the world and experience the consequences of their own decisions.
Therefore:
Could some of the mechanisms that help us understand an individual also help us understand the behavior of groups, organizations, or entire societies?
This possibility greatly expands the territory Atlas aims to explore.
The Question That Brings Them Together
All these questions ultimately converge into one:
Is it possible to build a model broad and coherent enough to represent how we interpret reality, act within it, learn from our experience, and change over time?
We do not yet know how far the answer may take us.
That is precisely why we are investigating it.
A Map, Not a Truth
Atlas does not begin with the claim that it has found a definitive explanation of human behavior.
We work in the opposite direction.
We build hypotheses.
We connect them.
We test them against specific situations.
We look for what the model succeeds in explaining, but we pay particular attention to what it fails to explain.
Because a contradiction does not necessarily destroy a map.
It may show us which part of the territory we had not yet seen.
That is why we conceive Atlas as an open and provisional model: a structure that must be able to change as better questions, new evidence, or previously hidden relationships emerge.
The map must adapt to the territory. Never the territory to the map.
A Cross-Disciplinary Investigation
Understanding human experience can hardly be approached from a single discipline.
Psychology, neuroscience, philosophy, biology, cognitive science, sociology, anthropology, artificial intelligence, and other fields study different parts of the same phenomenon from different perspectives.
Atlas also aims to explore the spaces between them.
The goal is not to mix disciplines indiscriminately, but to ask whether some of their findings can form part of a broader and more coherent representation.
Sometimes a piece takes on a different meaning when we discover the place it occupies within the puzzle.
How Far Could It Go?
Atlas’s first aim is simple:
to understand better.
But if sufficiently consistent relationships could be identified among the different processes involved in human experience, the resulting model could have much broader applications.
It could contribute to the study of learning, decision-making, conflict, personal transformation, human relationships, or collective behavior.
It could also open up a particularly interesting line of inquiry:
Could Part of This Architecture Be Represented Computationally?
Not to claim that a machine experiences the world as a human being does, but to investigate whether some of the relational processes involved in our decision-making can be modeled and studied.
This could allow us to raise new questions about simulation, artificial intelligence, and systems capable of considering not only objectives and outcomes, but also values, context, and consequences.
These are possibilities. Not conclusions.
And distinguishing between the two is part of the research.
What We Are Working On
Project Atlas is currently under development.
We are progressively building and revising a conceptual model of human experience, testing its relationships through specific cases and exploring its compatibility with knowledge from different disciplines.
At the same time, we are developing a structure that allows us to organize the cases studied, identify recurring patterns, and subject the project’s hypotheses to increasingly demanding tests.
Each new version of the model is provisional.
Each case may confirm it, expand it, or reveal where it needs to be corrected.
A Project Open to Other Perspectives
A project of this nature can hardly be developed from the perspective of a single person, discipline, or point of view.
That is why Atlas is open to conversations with researchers, psychologists, neuroscientists, philosophers, developers, artificial intelligence specialists, universities, institutions, and other people or organizations who find value in the questions we are asking.
We are also open to those who may be able to contribute resources, infrastructure, or funding to help expand the research.
We are not simply looking for people who agree with us.
We also need people who can show us where we may be wrong.
Because finding a good objection can be just as valuable as finding a good answer.
