The Weeping Mermaid

Here is the story of how mermaids are born: a rabbit chasing a carrot it can never reach.

The rabbit becomes a girl who weeps inconsolably over dreams of the impossible. A lake springs from her cheeks. From the lake spring rivers and waterfalls. And, finally, everything comes together in the sea.

The sea grows deeper and deeper until it covers her entire world. Drowned in her own tears, she begins to “breathe” underwater and becomes a mermaid. Wherever she goes, she sees only her own sorrow, rendering herself unable to see anything beyond her own suffering. A veil she draws herself to forget everything else.

In her private cinema, she plays the story she has chosen to construct on a loop. She asks everyone who passes by to watch it with her, yet none of them understands her because none is beneath the same sea as she is.

Feeling misunderstood makes her cry even more, and her sea grows ever deeper and darker.

One day, she hears a strange voice saying:

“You are not a mermaid, nor are you beneath the sea, but since you believe you are, try swimming towards the surface. If there is a sea, there must also be a surface. There you will be able to breathe again, truly breathe, and see the Sun shine. There you will realise that it was never quite as you painted it.”

The mermaid who returns to the surface returns to her tender childhood, where she no longer seeks the impossible but embraces what is real.
