He settled onto his sofa and started watching a suspense series. A scene came on in which a character was making his way across two parallel rows of glass panels. If he stepped on the wrong one, he would fall into a pit full of spikes and die. For some strange reason, he experienced the scene as though he himself were walking that line between life and death. He could feel it in his body, telling himself, “It’s going to break, it’s going to break…” And sure enough, it broke.
What he would never have imagined was that, at the precise moment he saw the glass break on screen, a glass shelf in a display cabinet in the very same room would shatter too. His mind went blank. He was stunned. He could make no sense of it. What kind of witchcraft was this? How could such a coincidence have happened?
How was it possible for two separate events to occur at the same time? He dreamed up all sorts of possible explanations, but much later, he realised it was simply the law of cause and effect unfolding in an astonishing 1:1 format.
They say that, after that, he stopped feeding fear in his mind so he would not have to sweep the floor unnecessarily.
