I want to say a little about this 2024 film because it carries some very important underlying messages. The first is that no one would want to live somewhere they felt oppressed, with their freedom restricted in different ways.
There are far too many people out there who devote their lives to imposing their way of thinking. More often than not, that way of thinking takes the form of walls dividing society in two. They rarely foster connections between different realities, needs, and feelings.
The antisocial person is the one who does not want a strong, constructive, peaceful society. They would rather see blood running through the streets; they prefer what is easy, impulsive, and devoid of reason or sense.
Another point the film makes is that, to grow, you need other people’s help. Thinking you have to do everything on your own because the truth belongs to you is an entirely ego-driven thought. Truth is everywhere, sometimes in a simple glance.
In the film, a situation arises in which they can succeed only by setting their individuality aside for a while; they can succeed only by being a little more humble. Another crucial point is that the protagonist does not tend to rush into things. Instead, he carefully reasons through the best option—the one that benefits everyone—and swallows his pride more than once to achieve his goals.
And when the light comes to him, he does not simply fold his arms and sit back. He takes action despite his fear, despite not knowing what might happen, and despite the potential risks. This is where his peaceful rebellion emerges. His inner Gandhi appears, speaking to him and saying: “Enough of this game, these ideas, these limitations, this lack of love for our neighbours. Enough of running away indefinitely. This is here and now; if it isn’t happening, I will make it happen.”
Every now and then, some rise up against the shadow, against their own shadow, and ignite their inner fire.
And they burn,
burn,
burn…
