You should not try to force yourself to let go, because it is counterproductive. Things that have no value fall away on their own. You come to understand their lack of value and stop desiring them. When you stop desiring them, you are free because the chain that bound you to them no longer exists.
However, for a desire to fall away completely, understanding must be deep, not merely superficial. That is why theory alone only serves the ego’s games of self-importance. If you go beyond theory to reach a complete understanding, the ego steps aside and falls silent, simply because that understanding is not governed by its limits and lies entirely beyond its iron grip.
The honest seeker does not seek theories, but experiences that give meaning to theory, knowing full well that experience is much closer to the Truth than a collection of words doing their human best to point towards it.
You could know all the theory and want to free yourself from a thousand attachments at once without being remotely ready. And you would not be ready because untying the intricately tangled knot in your mind would require a series of steps. In your desperation to let everything go at once and reach that “elevated” state of consciousness, you would tighten it far more than it already is instead of loosening it. That is where the spiritual ego becomes so strong: instead of freeing, it tightens its grip, becoming exceedingly vain.
It is precisely because those steps and that gradual unravelling must be respected that a “path” is needed. Anything you want to achieve requires perseverance, and perseverance only arises when there is a firm will. Without that will, no path is possible.
Great achievements come from perseverance coupled with humility, because that is what the world’s knots truly require. They certainly do not require the vain or the egotistical, but people who are truly willing to undertake work that demands so much patience.
Both Heaven and God are an eternal constant; therefore, working with them means aligning yourself with their constancy and determination.
Those who are truly on the path realise they know nothing and laugh. Even so, they do and say what needs to be done and said. Then they keep laughing as they walk the path and come to understand the surprises awaiting them.
A path of surprises is also a path of humility and innocence.
