A Matter of Love

Sometimes I ask myself: “Why so much fear?” And the answer is: “It’s a matter of love.” And, come to think of it, what isn’t?

The fear of rejection, of not being loved, of being worthless or dead, is so strong that we can easily abandon ourselves just to avoid facing it. The thing—or the joke—is that we are already dead.

We are that guy from The Sixth Sense, perhaps the only one among them pointing towards something and telling us that things are not right, that they cannot or should not be as they are, that there is no reason for them to be this way.

I understand that this is a very difficult circle to break through. I have spent quite some time playing tug-of-war near its boundaries myself. I understand that being willing to truly be yourself is within reach of very few, given what it really entails.

And I’ll tell you something: if everyone disappeared and you were left alone, it would be very simple; they would have done the dirty work for you. The real challenge is doing it while the world keeps turning and you are still there, living within it in a reality foreign to it.

Others hide inside the shell of “me against the world”, trying to deceive themselves or make excuses to avoid facing that difficult test, but we all know that does not work.

That circle, so very difficult to break through, separates the free person from the slave. Some will understand my words because they are, or have been, at the same crossroads. For everyone else, it is a matter as simple and as complex as letting go of the cynic we are playing.
